A Puzzling Place

XING: The Land Beyond is a fantastical, non-combative, spiritual journey through the afterlife. Along the way you are challenged to solve a myriad of puzzles which require logic, creativity, and the mastery of environmental control. In this peaceful afterlife, puzzles can be solved at your own pace. Through your journey you will learn to harness the power of the sun, the rains, the snow, and more.

XING: The Land Beyond has been developed with accessibility in mind, and conforms to color-blindness, deafness, and has no time-constrains in its puzzle design.

Virtual Reality

XING: The Land Beyond has full VR support for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, with options to use either SDK, as well as a range of controller options, including tracked motion controllers and traditional gamepads.

Great care has been taken to ensure XING is an exciting and comfortable experience for all lovers of virtual worlds. We offer two distinct movement options for players:

• An innovative new motion controller-based free-movement system, with a balance of comfort and usability. We call this "reins", because it is similar to directing a horse when you ride.
  
• A more direct analog stick based movement system compatible with both motion controllers and gamepads - offering a more traditional experience with snap turning and smooth rotation options.

  A lively, lush work of art. This game is possibly the most gorgeous I've experienced in VR, and is oh so relaxing to boot. The puzzles are simple, but the interplay between story(featuring fantastic voice-overs) and solving make the experience rewarding and engaging. One thing I really want to give note to is how amazing the soundtrack is, it knows just when to stand out and captures the majesty of adventure very well. So glad to have this game!. Well worth the price of admision if your looking for a relaxing game thats also both awesome visually in and out of VR and enjoyable to play. If I had to have a complaint it would be the hand holding around puzzles the game nearly spoon feeds you the answers every step of the way. I was really looking for a more MYST like experiance or perhaps a combination of Myst and the Witness.
  
  One warning I would give is to those who dont like or struggle with platformer style jumping this game contains a fair amount of this type of activity and I can see it being extremely frustrating for some.. I have been waiting for a game like this. Magical, immersive, beautiful, relaxing and with puzzles that are not too difficult (so far). It's like a casual zen version of the Talos Principle. Menus are excellent, all the settings you need, de-coupled controller movement, performance is really good with high SS, etc. What more can you want? They even added some nice voice-acting. The music is perfect too (but maybe some more tracks would be welcome). If you like exploring and puzzling in a beautiful relaxing environment, I highly recommend this.. Got about 5 hours under my belt and just started the 3rd world. I'm really enjoying this game. I'm not having any issues with graphics or performance. I've tweaked a lot of settings and I have a high-end PC, so YMMV.
  
  I'd have to say that this is a very laid back and chill puzzle game. It's mostly about the atmosphere and the spoon-fed poetic story snipets along the way. There's something almost Zen about it. It's not very deep and the puzzles start out very straight-forward. It does increase in difficulty as you go, but not a whole lot that it's going to frustrate you. If you are familiar with The Witness, this is NOT anything like that. The puzzle complexity and more open world setting of The Witness is a much bigger challenge. But that's ok. Xing is like a themepark with enough environmental puzzles to make the scenery more enjoyable.
  
  Someone complained about the background music. I found it soothing, but there is an option to turn the volume of the music down/off, so if it bugs you, there is that option. And then maybe play your own.
  
  Personally, I'm glad that they chose the locomotion method that they did. I don't suffer from VR sickness at all, and I find the experience of moving through the world of Xing nice and relaxing. I like the method for interacting with objects. I often play seated, with player height raised via OpenVR Advanced Settings. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to reach certain objects, but the game mechanic makes it super easy.
  
  All in all, it has made for the type of VR experience that I really dig.. Be careful what you wish for.” That's what I told myself about halfway through this game. Xing: The Land Beyond is a beautiful puzzle game where you assume the role of a person who had just passed way. Your goal is to help the Guardian track down four lost souls so they can be “preserved”. If successful, you'll never be born again, allowing you to pass through to the other side.

  When I started this game, I began to think to myself, “I hope the puzzles get harder than this” because it felt as though I was playing “Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses”, a children's PC game. “How do you know this?”, you'll probably asking yourself. Simple, I played it with my daughter who was 4 years old at the time.
  
  About a third of the way through Xing, the puzzles became much more complex. Then, at the half way point is when I utter the first sentence in this review. By the time I got towards the end, the puzzles where becoming insanely hard, BUT, I managed to do it without help. When it was over, I felt like my brain had just been baked.
  
  One of the things I really liked about this game is the progress button in the pause menu. It tells you how many letters you found, how many there are to go, and how many runes found. Each world has five runes and you have to find them all if you want to know what the signs are trying to tell you.
  
  I didn't have any technical problems with this game but I did get trapped on the last puzzle of the game, forcing me to start the area again... I wasn't happy. However, I managed to finish.
  
  At the time of this review, Xing: The Land Beyond was selling for $19.99. I logged in about 16 hours from start to finish so it's well worth it. I wouldn't even wait for a sale, buy it now.
